Matthew P.How has shown us the real picture of war at Afganisthan. What for this war? Is it not USA is encraoaching others rights.Soviet has collapsed and disintegrated and USA is following the same path. USA spending more than $8.18 trillion and technically bankrupt. The national debt currently stand at $ 9.8 trillion,up $4 trillion since George Bush took office. The Afghan & Iraq war expenditure come around $12 billion a month. It was inevitable that the American Empire would also decline and collapse.
America cannot take the burden of the war. Time is very fast approaching that America will break up like Soviet Union. Several US analysts have expressed the hope that the entire continental USA can be saved by abondoning the empire. If immediate action is not taken to stop war and defense expenditure there may lead to civil and social unrest, chaos and breakdown of society. More expenditure on social work including education and employment generation is not taken up immediately there will be massive unrest and overall law and order will create serious problem.

My old Vietnam nemisis, Dan Elsberg, and I met again two decades later and I told him that I marvelled at how old we look. Age must have made us wiser for we click in our analysis of War on terror, though still far apart on Vietnam. Neverthelss, we seem to, in our old age, remember lessons that Petraeus and McChrystal in careerist zeal forget. Soldiers in spaceman-like armor kickingin a home's door at midnight are not going to be seen as liberators. Yet insurgents will be seen as enemies but always as fellow Iraqis, Afghans or Muslims no matter what. In trying to show "presence" through intimidating "kinetics" we are seen as invaders and silence will prevail while our patriotic moms and dads that volunteered are kiled. Must they die hopelessly as so many died in Vietnam to protect America's image of bovine ferocity?

I’m amazed that Matthew Hoh’s disillusionment is with the purported reasons for the AfPak embroilment rather than with the military/industrial reasons which are the real objectives for all US involvements overseas. The war was made in Washington for American reasons, and there has never been any intention to benefit the Afghan people.

In one way it’s inspiring to see that the American ‘apparat’ still has honourable men in it; in another it’s sad to see that men like this have for too long believed the patriotic flimflam that has inspired their sacrifices. But that’s what honourable men do.

Perhaps it’s time to realise that a great number of those opposing US intentions around the world are also honourable men.

You may have this up already but Daniel Ellsberg's recent interview is highly recommended as well:
http://therealnews.com/t/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=74&jumival=4375&updaterx=2009-10-25+12%3A09%3A07
There're many excellent points Ellsberg makes but his observation that Obama, like Johnson, faces a military revolt if he were to reverse course is the most significant. Jeff Huber has been writing on that issue over at his blog as well: zenhuber.blogspot.com
