I wonder, will this now be the start of the war between the two sects? If so, does that also mean the Washington bumblers have started another war/situation where the U.S. will be blamed?

With evidence of failure all around us, it's ever more important to try to understand why the Neocons and their successors continue to regard their policies as successful.

The simple answer would be to regard them as delusional --- insane, stupid, venal, avaricious, in various mixtures. It's more interesting to construct a set of premises from which it follows that the policies are indeed a success --- and then to hypothesize that these premises (which are not ours) are the standards by which they evaluate their actions.

If, for example, you think long-term --- decades, not years -- and your goal is control, if you're confident of your ultimate military, economic and cyber-power, then the current instabilities are just steps along the path, heading in the right direction.

This would also explain why the Neocons and Neoneocons are impervious to the kind of criticism that regards the current situation as 'failure' as opposed to success.

So the "O" is embarrassed from being given the Nobel Peace Prize??? Then why didn't he reject it? Because he's narcissistic? That's what I believe, rather than what the excuses this production tries to portray.

The “best and the brightest” keep Americans in the dark about government snooping on private citizens.
Snowden at great risk has done a public service by exposing the real issues and igniting a debate about government surveillance. I question that he might have thought in the speaking and publishing of his revelations that the issue of secrecy was to shield incompetence.
“the function of secrecy, more often than not, is to shield incompetence.” –
Secrecy itself or what the NSA by snooping on private citizens by their power - behavior that has undermined Americans’ trust in them, are not the real issues? And what Slates tec writer and Washington bureaucrats and their media are doing as they trash Edward Snowden is shielding incompetence?
Golly, Paul I must be missing something here.

The insiders and their sycophantic press people are piling on, because that's what they do. That the so called watchers, both in & out of government have sold their souls to the "Devil" for those 30 pieces of silver, but the price they have to pay in return, exceeds any benefit they might derive.

The argument being made by the NSA and its defenders is that the success of its operations hinge on secrecy. Loss of secrecy cripples national security -- so the argument goes. What Manjoo is arguing (and I have argued many times before) is that the function of secrecy, more often than not, is to shield incompetence.

Long ago, I learned America is, and always has been, a myth. We are fed this myth from birth on. America has never been about reality, honesty, integrity, democracy or any of the rest of that BS. The real problem is Americans refuse to accept the utter lack of reality. Seeing through the mirage is depressing but, in the end, liberating.

“the slacker who came in from the cold,” with “all the qualifications to become a grocery bagger.”

A short while ago in a comment to a ‘take down’ article from Slate by Farad Majoo . I took exception to the manner in which tech columnist Manjoo in his article went about ‘dissing’ Snowden while using information Snowden himself offered about his qualifications and education.
" It seems like ‘a put down’ but perhaps it was really about calling into question NSA competence as they employ IT personnel." was a view in reply. Umm.. perhaps but I still see it as a stretch especially in the light of comments on Snowed in a similar vein by:
John Boehner. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Sen. Susan Collins columnists Richard Cohen, David Brooks, Jeffrey Toobin, Roger Simon, Roger Brokow, Matt Miller
