Site Guide
War in Context is a news aggregation site and a blog. Each post has a heading that identifies the type of entry (news, opinion, analysis etc.). The heading is also a permanent link to that particular post. Beneath each heading is a link to an article appearing on another web site (e.g. Washington Post, New York Times etc.). Occasionally the heading will say “editorial” — these are original pieces written by the editor of War in Context, Paul Woodward. The editor’s writing also appears within posts as “editor’s comments.” Readers are welcome to add their own comments. (Please first read the commenting guidelines.)
There are several ways of digging into the material here:
1. Using Site Search in the right sidebar.
This is for specific queries. For instance, if you’re looking for posts making reference to the US ambassador to Iraq, Ryan C. Crocker, then a suitable querie would be crocker or ryan crocker. If you used the exact phrase “ryan crocker” (words within quotation marks are treated as a phrase) then the search results will not include references to “ryan c crocker”. For the best results choose unambiguous terms or phrases. Queries are not case sensative.
2. Using Categories in the left sidebar and under each post.
Every post is “tagged” with one or more categories. Clicking a category link will return a list of all the posts in that category. The categorization system used here has four top-level categories:
a. Editor’s comments — for those readers who care to ponder the words of Chairman Woodward)
b. Entities — organizations including some of their leading actors
c. Issues — from Christian Zionism to the war on terrorism
c. Lands — territorial areas without distinction between those that do or don’t possess internationally recognized sovereignty.
Although some categories may seem redundant (e.g. “Iraq” — a plurality of the posts on this site fall into this category), these are helpful for search engines indexing the site.
3. Links to recent posts and recent comments appear in the left sidebar.
