He is quite right, of course, as most Jews who know the history of their own religion clearly understand. It’s an exceedingly interesting history, and getting to know it properly involves reading not just the historians but also the TANAK and the earliest Talmudic writings.
As Herzl intended it, Zionism was a completely secular invention. In its origins it had nothing to do with Judaism. It was a response to antisemitism, not Judaism.
