Biggest jump ever seen in global warming gases

The Associated Press reports: The global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide jumped by the biggest amount on record, the U.S. Department of Energy calculated, a sign of how feeble the world’s efforts are at slowing man-made global warming.

The new figures for 2010 mean that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four years ago.

“The more we talk about the need to control emissions, the more they are growing,” said John Reilly, co-director of MIT’s Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change.

The world pumped about 564 million more tons (512 million metric tons) of carbon into the air in 2010 than it did in 2009. That’s an increase of 6 percent. That amount of extra pollution eclipses the individual emissions of all but three countries – China, the United States and India, the world’s top producers of greenhouse gases.

It is a “monster” increase that is unheard of, said Gregg Marland, a professor of geology at Appalachian State University, who has helped calculate Department of Energy figures in the past.

Extra pollution in China and the U.S. account for more than half the increase in emissions last year, Marland said.

This would be fine if it was true

However take a look here http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/trends/#mlo_growth

You will see that 1998, 2002 and 2005 exceed the increase seen in 2010. Each of the years showing a larger than normal increase, including 2010, is down to an El Niño year where, due to ocean currents, the sea surface temperature of the pacific is higher than normal.

The reason gas does not dissolve as well in a liquid when it is warmer – see a warming beer on a hot summers day – and CO2 is different to the other gases in that it reacts chemically with water to form carbonic acid. This association is also temperature dependant

Now before everyone runs around panicking please note the numbers are parts per million which means today right now in our terrible carbon burning lifestyles there is just 0.0389% CO2 in the atmosphere ~ 1 part in 2512. That CO2 by the way is the food source of the entire planet through the action of Sun on Water and CO2 and Chlorophyll called photosynthesis

Now given that a Durban Climate Change Shindig is about to take place at the end of November what do you make of this “news” article?

I’d call it for what it is …. propaganda

    Regards

    Dave

  2. Get a PhD fergadsakes

David Ahole, spoken like a guy who couldn’t solve a closed-form differential equation if his life depended on it, much less interpret the flux derivatives of a state-of-the-art model. What kind of moron plutocrats use innumerate sad clowns as shills? It’s just sad, making this poor loser try and debunk nonlinear models with one number and a lot of blah blah blah.

If “Get a PhD fergadsakes” has a PhD, then sharing some of your knowledge would be more useful than insulting people who are ignorant about climate change.
