    Interesting but very mechanistic. Daniel Dennett wrote Consciousness Explained many years ago (copyright 1991) and it was also very mechanistic and as I recall (not perfectly) a somewhat different explanation. I must note that Damasio doesn’t address the ideas of biocentrism, that grew out of quantum theories, that regard the observer—consciousness—if you will, as the force collapsing the quantum wave function and hence the creator or modeler of the universe. Concsiousness is thus more central to creation as the partner with energy at the beginning of the universe (the god of the Higgs Boson perhaps? LOL)

    As a secular Buddhist I must admit to preferring mind models that have the capacity to resonate with other minds at a distance, which the mechanistic closed-body mind cannot address.
